How Many Permanent Outdoor Lights Do I Need? Measure Your Roofline Before Buying
Quick answer: Measure the lengths of the roofline sections you want illuminated, add those measurements together, and select a supported kit size and branch layout. Do not calculate from your home's square footage. Do not count cable-only gaps as if they were lighted roofline.
How Measurement Works on a Real PL2 Installation
Watch the actual measuring process in the 1:14 planning section of Jeff Springer's APPECK-sponsored installation. Note which sections need light and which are unlit cable-only jumps. This is a real-home demonstration, not a universal measurement rule.

Step 1: Sketch the lighting layout
Draw the front, sides, peaks, garage and second-story sections you want to light. Label each planned illuminated segment in feet. Mark dormers, corners and any unlit gaps separately. Also mark a suitable controller location and where the electrical connection will be made according to the product manual.
Step 2: Add only the illuminated sections
Example A: Garage 28ft + front eave 46ft + gable 18ft = 92ft illuminated. Start by comparing 100ft light-kit options.
Example B: Lower eaves 102ft + upper eaves 67ft = 169ft illuminated. A 200ft class of system may be appropriate, but first check the actual configuration and required branch layout.
Example C: Front, side and rear sections total 358ft. Compare supported 400ft configurations, accounting for branch layouts, controller capacity, accessories and signal limits before purchase.
Step 3: Convert feet into light count for your exact model
LED spacing varies by product. For APPECK PL2, the listed kits contain approximately 72 LEDs at 100ft, 144 at 200ft, 216 at 300ft and 288 at 400ft. These are product-specific kit counts, not a universal rule for other brands or series. For custom layouts, confirm the number of light sections and the controller's limit per output.
Step 4: Match the plan to a compatible APPECK model
- 100–150ft, simple RGBW: C5113 Permanent Outdoor Lights 2; dedicated 2700K warm white.
- 200–400ft, RGBW: C5111 RGBW Permanent Outdoor Lights 2; use the approved parallel-branch layout rather than an assumed single long run.
- 100–400ft, tunable RGBCW: PL2 RGBCW Permanent Outdoor Lights; dual outputs, modular sections and supported accessory-based expansion.
- 100–200ft, custom fit and high brightness: C5106 Pro; check model-specific cutting and installation instructions.
Step 5: Plan track and unlit cable gaps separately
A 20ft non-lighted gap between two rooflines may require an appropriately rated extension cable, not 20ft of additional lighted dots. The same applies to track: match its physical profile to the chosen APPECK family. For independent track purchases, see the C5111 / PL2 track or the C5106 Pro track. Track compatibility is not universal.
Step 6: Check electrical limits before checkout
Kit footage does not establish the maximum continuous powered run. Review controller outputs, lights per branch, cable length, power injection and signal amplification for your model. PL2's larger supported architecture requires compatible additional power and signal components; a 400ft kit should never be assumed to work as one uninterrupted single-output string.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use two 100ft kits as one 200ft string?
Only if the specific product's controller, wiring and branch arrangement permit it. Never assume two retail kits can be daisy-chained.
Should I buy extra footage?
Measure first, then allow for real layout needs and modular/cuttable sections. Oversizing is not a substitute for planning electrical limits.
What if I need hidden extension cables?
Keep non-lighted cable jumps on a separate parts list. Read the clean-wiring guide.
Next step: Compare 100ft, 200ft, 300ft and 400ft choices and compare APPECK models, then view PL2 light-kit options or view C5111 long-run kits.
